  Dear Reader,

We wish you all a happy new year! The upsurge of COVID-19 has sent us back home but not before we had visited our project sites. Those are the stories we’ll cover in this issue. Meanwhile, the upcoming year seems to be slowly filling up with many interesting events (mostly, virtual) that focus on nature, biodiversity and our future. The Conference of Parties to the UN Convention on Biodiversity will meet again for part 2 of the COP15 in Kunming, China to finalise the global framework and targets for managing nature through 2030.

The seventeenth issue of the newsletter and the first one for 2022 features stories from the projects, with a spotlight on the upcoming World Wetlands Day and how 2021 went for biodiversity. We thank you for your continuous support and welcome your valuable feedback towards further improving our engagement with you.

Stay safe and healthy.

Warmly,
Editors

Wetlands and People
Connecting people and wetlands in development cooperation
On 2nd February 2022, World Wetlands Day will be celebrated globally, the 45th time since it was first observed, but the first time as a UN International Day. This year's theme, ‘Wetlands Action for People and Nature’, is a call for action, an appeal to invest in saving the world’s wetlands from disappearing and restoring the degraded ecosystems. As wetland loss continues at an alarming rate, for communities directly dependent on these ecosystems, this translates into a loss of a source of water, food, and fuel. To counter this, today, there are increasing efforts to engage these crucial actors in wetland management.

Nature: finally, a part of the Climate dialogue!
A look at global events on biodiversity in 2021
In 2021 biodiversity and nature took centre stage in the global conversation. The last two years of the global pandemic and health crisis have convinced nations to take stronger actions to counter biodiversity loss and consciously integrate nature in their dialogue and decisions. Many events and reports in 2021 played an important role in bringing about this change. We’ll look at some of them is this article.

Sustainable Agricultural Practices

Sustainable agriculture is farming to meet society's current food needs without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. These practices improve crop yield while conserving soil, water, and other natural resources. These animated films were produced under the developPPP.de project with AVT McCormick in five languages.
